Police are appealing for witnesses after a man forcibly entered the home of an elderly woman in Outwood on Saturday, 9 August.

Shortly after 10.40am as the 82-year-old victim arrived home and opened the front door of her property in Springhill Close, a man has barged his way in. A struggle has ensued with the pensioner suffering bruising to her body before the man left the property with the victim's purse.

The man is described as white, in his late teens to mid 20s, between 5ft 2ins to 5ft 6ins tall, wearing light-coloured trousers with a darker top with the hood pulled tightly around his face. He made off in the Ledger Lane direction and it is possible that he had scratches to the face.

Detective Constable Bryn Hampshire, of Wakefield District CID, said: "This was understandably an extremely frightening experience for the victim and identifying the man responsible is an absolute priority for us.

"The victim was returning from visiting a convenience store in Potovens Lane and it is possible that this man has followed her from there or somewhere along the route. We are keen to hear from anyone who saw a man matching the suspect's description in the Potovens Lane/Lingwell Gate Lane area before the offence or who saw a man in the Ledger Lane area afterwards.

"During the struggle that took place in the property, the victim has scratched the man to the face. It is not know whether this has left any visible injury but we would urge anyone who knows someone matching this man's description who has returned home with an unexplained scratch to their face to make contact.

"Anyone with information is asked to call either Wakefield District CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
