Divisional Profile

North West Leeds Division is based in the north and west of Leeds.
It stretches to the edge of the city centre in the south incorporating the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University and a large youthful student population in communities including Burley, Headingley and Woodhouse.

To the north it reaches Otley and includes the county’s gateway to the world – Leeds/Bradford International Airport which is continuing to expand in both international and domestic air traffic. In the west of the division are the busy communities of Pudsey, Armley and Bramley as well as Farsley, Calverley and Rodley.

Home to Yorkshire County Cricket and the Leeds Rhinos, the division’s population is boosted regularly by the large influx of people visiting the Headingley Stadium for rugby league and test cricket matches. There is also an increasing commercial and leisure sector with new sports complexes, retail parks, leisure centres, cinemas and night-clubs being attracted to the area.

It also houses one of the largest remand prisons in the country at HMP Leeds.

Welcome to the Neighbourhood Policing website for North West Leeds Division. I am Chief Superintendent Ian Whitehouse, the Divisional Commander. It is my responsibility to deliver the best possible policing service to anyone who lives in, works in or visits our division.

To do this I have designed our services so that Neighbourhood Policing is at the heart of everything we do. This means local officers and staff having local ownership of your problems.

On the left of the screen you can see our Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPT’s) that work right across the division. You will also see details of when your next public forum is to be held. We really want you to become involved in your neighbourhood. Your input is vital to our work. It is the strengthening of this bond that will ensure you get the policing service you need and expect.

This approach to Neighbourhood Policing is really starting to make an impact. Confidence that we will do a good or excellent job now stands at 56%. Three years ago that figure stood at 39.8%, so you can see how much my strategy of delivering Neighbourhood Policing is working for you. Not only are you more confident in your officers and staff they continue to crack down on crime. There are some headline performance targets that reflect on how well we are doing such as, Overall crime is down by 509 offences compared to last year, burglary dwelling is down by 207 offences compared to last year, and criminal damage is down 412 offences compared to last. These are just a few of the targets that we measure ourselves against. This is down to dedicated people working extremely hard and putting in the effort together with your support.

We are also judged as a Service on how well we keep you updated on the progress of our investigations. This month we are launching “In the Dock”.

‘In the Dock’ is a news release accompanied by a custody picture of an offender on the WYP website in selected Crown and Magistrates Court cases. It is aimed at improving public confidence and satisfaction in the Criminal Justice System and a fantastic way of highlighting the good work of North West Leeds Officers - whose details will also be included, under the banner of ‘Justice seen, justice done’.

I’m proud of the work we do and you should be really assured in the knowledge that Officers and Staff in North West Leeds are working hard around the clock every day to look after you. I hope that through the “In the Dock” initiative you will see first hand some of this excellent work.

So, be confident in your local police. They are doing a great job. If you speak to your local officers I’m sure you will reach the same conclusion.
