Ossett had some unusual vehicles parked on the precinct on Friday. There was a top of the range Range Rover and a Speed Boat. Residents in Ossett were given a chance to see some of the items that West Yorkshire Police has seized from criminals.

Some criminals use the proceeds of their crime to buy high value items at the expense of their victims, but using legislation enables police to take them away and give back to the communities affected by crime.

During the last financial year just over £5 million was confiscated from criminals in West Yorkshire and £8.6 million worth of assets were seized.

There are criminals living within the Wakefield district who are living off the proceeds of crime, WHY SHOULD THEY ? I f you have any information please ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit www.whyshouldthey.com

10/07/2010 Towngate Result

During the last month officers from Wakefield North West NPT have been made aware of possible nuisance/bogus callers. Concerned residents have been contacting the station with regard to a company that is cold calling via telesales for health mobility equipment. Victims of these calls have expressed that they were made to feel uneasy by the manner of questions asked by the telesales operator; questions ranged from “Are you alone in your house?” “How much money do you have?” and “We will send someone round to see you”. Residents have then gone on to state that field sales reps attend at the home address and attempt to aggressively sell mobility equipment whilst at the same time wandering around the property.

This being noted Wakefield North West NPT would like to remind residents to stay vigilant against these types of callers.  This would include to always ask the caller for identification on arrival, never open the door if identification can not be produced and to never give personal details away if you can not be certain of who is asking for it.

If anyone feels that they have been subject to this type of selling in specific mobility health equipment, they can contact PCSO 784 Oliver Haycock at Ossett Police Station who is investigating reported incidents.

Partners and Communities Together Meetings (PACT)

This is the main local public engagement meeting. It is based on your neighbourhood rather than your ward to make it more specific and relevant to you and your local environment.

The benefits of attending this meeting are that:

  • you will get to meet some of the officers that are responsible for your neighbourhood;
  •  you will have the opportunity to participate in discussion that leads to the identification of the priorities the community want the Police to focus on;
  •  you will have access to crime data that is relevant to your area;
  •  you will be updated on what action the Police has taken in relation to previously identified priorities; and
  • you will be updated on what has happened to criminals convicted for crimes in your area.

We welcome the public to these meetings because we value your input on the issues Police should focus on to make your neighbourhood a safer and more pleasant place to live.

The meetings are held 6 weekly on a Wednesday. The next meeting will be held on 13th October,  2010  at The Maypole Children's Centre located on High Street in Gawthorpe. The meetings start at 7pm and because we recognise that peoples' time is important we endeavour to restrict the meetings to an hour in length. Forthcoming meetings have been arranged for:-
24th November
5th January 2011

If you would like to read the minutes of the last PACT meeting held on the 21st July 2010.  please click here
-
Although we would really like to see you in person at the PACT meetings we understand that it is not always possible for you to make it. As a result we have introduced an esurvey whereby you can nominate an issue that you feel should be a policing priority in your area. PLEA TO STOP SUMMER SNEAKS

Insecure doors and windows have been blamed for more than half of all house burglaries across the Wakefield district this month.

Police today urged householders to be vigilant revealing that 23 of the 45 homes targeted by criminals were insecure. Last month the tally was 49 of the 134 burglaries across the Wakefield district.

Detective Inspector Stuart Spencer said: “Due to the warmer weather in the last few weeks we have seen an increase in the number of sneak-in burglaries.

“These offences could easily be prevented by householders taking a few precautions to ensure they are not targeted by opportunist thieves.

“People need to remember that easy points of access, like front doors, need to be kept locked when relaxing outdoors. At night ground floor doors and windows should be locked.

“A handbag, wallet, mobile phone or keys left next to an unlocked front door or open window can present an incredibly easy target for opportunist burglars who can take them in just a few seconds. The message couldn’t be simpler. Lock or your door or risk losing out to crime.

There are a number of things people can do to prevent a sneak-in theft:

• Lock all doors and windows when working in the garden or garage
• A simple security chain from DIY stores can be installed to prevent unwanted entry into the home
• Never leave keys in the locks of doors or windows
• Avoid leaving valuables near windows, for example mobile phones, handbags, jewellery, expensive ornaments and keys

Further crime prevention advice is available from the West Yorkshire Police website at www.westyorkshire.police.uk or by contacting your local Crime Reduction Officer on 0845 6060606.

Switch On to Keep Burglars at Bay

With the dark nights now upon us, West Yorkshire residents are being urged to take a few simple precautions to guard against burglars.

Although burglary rates have been significantly reduced in recent years, West Yorkshire Police is still keen to do all it can to combat this seasonal rise. And as part of the autumn and winter campaign, the Force will be launching various initiatives to target known burglars.
Neighbourhood Policing Teams will also be out and about on high visibility patrols and will visit burglary 'hotspots' to give residents practical help and advice to protect their homes.

Advice for householders to help guard against burglary on our "Lighten Up" page.

Neighbourhood Watch

This is a work in progress. West Yorkshire Police support and value the efforts of local neighbourhood watch co-ordinators, however, we need more people to volunteer for this role. We have a specialised unit that helps set things up and your local Community Beat Managers will actively support you when it comes to publicising meetings and deciding on agenda items. Community Beat Managers will also attend such meetings wherever possible. This sort of meeting gives us an opportunity to tell you about crime, anti-social behaviour and other issues in your locality and what is being done to address it. It also gives us an informal setting to discuss matters.

If you are already represented by a Neighbourhood Watch then please attend these meetings. You will be notified of the dates, times and venues. If you are not sure of whether you are currently represented by a Neighbourhood Watch then please contact the Neighbourhood Policing Team and we will happily tell you.

Some facts:

  • Neighbourhood Watch is the largest voluntary crime prevention group in the country. It was introduced into West Yorkshire in 1985.
  • It is an active partnership with the Police, the community and other agencies.
  • It works to reduce crime, disorder, the fear of crime which improves the quality of life and makes communities safer.

Neighbourhood Watch Groups assist to achieve this aim by :

  • sharing information about local crime
  • reporting suspicious circumstances
  • taking crime prevention measures to protect their homes and possessions
  • looking after neighbours homes, especially when they are away
  • Through closely working with the Police,Neighbourhood

Watch schemes can:

  • cut crime and opportunities for crime
  • reduce the fear of crime
  • assist in the detection and apprehension of criminals through members providing information
  • reassure members of the public
  • encourage closer and safer communities
  • improved communication between the police and scheme members

How to get involved with Neighbourhood Watch:

Gauge the level of interest in your area from neighbours ( although there is isn't a minimum of households required to start a scheme, it is important that there is enough interest).

Contact your local neighbourhood watch liaison officer who will be able to provide advice and assistance.

Arrange a meeting which will be attended by the liaison officer and the relevant Community Beat Manager (a PC or PCSO)
a co-ordinator and deputy will be elected to act as the link between the police and members of the scheme

The role of Neighbourhood Watch Liaison Officer:

  • To promote/assist existing neighbourhood watch schemes
  • Assist and encourage the formation of new schemes
  • To be aware of crime patterns within the division and provide regular information to neighbourhood watch co-ordinators
  • To act as a liaison officer between the police and neighbourhood watch co-ordinators
