Don’t let the car thieves catch YOU Out!

Thieves just love it when you leave your car unlocked or insecure. Don’t be a victim to vehicle crime, lock your car doors even when you are just nipping in for a minute. Close your windows even if it’s a hot and sunny day. AND don’t leave valuables in the car. Sat nav’s and removable CD/radios should be taken out and not hidden under the dash or seats; these are the first places any thief will look.
The majority of attacked vehicles have been left insecure by their owners.
Don’t make it easy for them, it’s your property so look after it.

24th July 2010
Poachers!

Over the last 2 weeks we have had reports of 4x4's running across a farmers field during the night believed to be possibly poaching deer and rabbits. This could have caused a considerable amount of damage to the farmers crops resulting in a loss of earnings but fortunately it occurred on a piece of field which was not planted so no damage was caused.

We have also attended another call where a domestic cat was shot dead with an air rifle in the same locality leaving it's owners devastated with the loss of their very much loved pet.

The farm land is situated just off Stranglands Lane in Ferrybridge (virtually opposite the Power Station)

If you have any information or knowledge of anyone committing these offences in this area could you please come forward and contact us on the details below. Thank you.

Monthly News update for July - PC 1217 Charlie Banks

Our crime figures are still the envy of most other pact areas; during the last six week period between PACT meetings there was not a single report of any vehicle crime in the whole Ferrybridge area !

At the last Knottingley PACT I reported that there had been five house burglaries in the area and in four of them entry had been gained via insecure doors or windows. Please remember to keep your homes secure, even when you are at home and particularly when you are out in the garden.
The clichéd vision of a burglar skulking round the streets in the middle of the night could not be further from the truth. Most burglaries are committed during the day by opportunists looking for an easy target.
If you have a caller at your door asking for directions, the time, a drink or a light, the chances are that caller was looking to see if anyone was around.
PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO REPORT ANY STRANGE CALLERS TO YOUR DOOR, WE NEED TO KNOW WHO AND WHERE THEY ARE .

Last month we had the ‘ Prison, me , no way !’ team visit at Knottingley High school. The day was very informative and the kids seemed to enjoy it very much. The mobile prison cell was a real eye opener and some of the stories the prison officers told the children gave much food for thought. The day was a great success and we will be looking to run the same presentation next year.

During the winter we had a number of wheelie bins being stolen from the Richmond Avenue area. We are currently seeking funding to put security measures in place to prevent the same problem next winter and avoid the upset suffered by the elderly residents living there.

I have finally finished trawling through all the calls received regarding anti-social behaviour in Ferrybridge since the installation of the temporary shelter in Ferrybridge park. The results are far better than anyone could have anticipated. Anti-social behaviour in Ferrybridge has dropped by 45% compared to the same period twelve months ago. The Knottingley PACT have now given their formal approval for the project to be extended into Knottingley, unfortunately the current fiscal situation may make it difficult to find any money to pay for such a project. We shall keep working toward the final goal but I have a feeling it will be a long haul.

Aaron and Simon’s football team in Knottingley is a fantastic success and the lads are overwhelmed by the response. The kids playing on the team have been told that anyone who gets into trouble will be excluded and this has led to an improvement in the behaviour of quite a few young men in the area. The most improved kids will soon be taken for a boat ride down the canal with ‘project pugwash’, a free barge service.

On Sunday 11th of July 2010, Amy and Simon will be on Morrisons car park , Hilltop, Knottingley, stamping bikes with heir postcodes. The service will be free, is a good way to make your bike more secure and increases your chances of getting the bike back should anyone take it.

As ever, I would like to thank everyone for their continued support and assistance. If you have any thoughts or observations on any of the points raised herein please get in touch. If you have any information you think would assist us in tackling crime or disorder in the area please pass it on, it will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.

I remain
Yours sincerely
Pc Charlie Banks

Crime Prevention Advice

The Golden Rules!

Secure your home - keep windows and doors locked. Fit extra locks and a burglar alarm.

Shine a light - make sure any intruders are visible by keeping your property well lit.

Remove assistance - ensure that ladders, wheelie bins and garden furniture is out of sight or locked away from assisting in the enterance to your property.

Access Control - refuse access to unknown/suspicious callers. Do not give any information out to unknown callers over the telephone.

Enviromental Change - pruning/removing shrubbery & keeping your garden nice prevents crime taking place.

Burglary - Summertime! (14th June 2010)
Now we are well into the summer months, we are more likely to leave our windows and doors open in our vehicles and homes. This makes us all vulnerable to theft.

Ensure you are vigilant by:
Locking all doors and remove the key;
Locking all doors and windows when working in the garden or garage;
Invest in a security chain or fix an alarm on the door;
Never leave keys in the locks of doors or windows;
Never leave house or car keys on display where they can be hooked with a fishing type device;
Avoid leaving valuables near windows.
Remember - Insurance companies may not pay out compensation if entry to your home has been gained through an unlocked door or window.

Theft From Motor Vehicles.

Many of the instances we suffer can be easily avoided by people not leaving valuables on display in their car. If it is necessary to leave items in your car then put them in a locked boot. Likewise, work vans should not have tools stored in them overnight.

Satellite navigation devices are particularly prone to being stolen and should be removed from the vehicle. Things that give away the fact there may be one in a vehicle are: the cradle being left out on display, the sucker mark from a removed cradle being visible on the windscreen, a bluetooth enabled device communicating with a potential thief.
Similar issues arise with radios and CD players. If they are detachable then remove them from temptation.

Remember, it will still be upsetting and inconvenient if your car is broken into and searched, even if nothing is stolen. So remove the temptation for your vehicle to be targeted in the first place.

Community Payback

The Courts in Wakefield sentence offenders to 3000 hours Community Payback every month. Small groups of offenders, supervised by the Probation Service will be working on community initiatives in your area. These initiatives will be chosen by you at PACT meetings. It can be anything from litter picking and graffiti removal to painting an old people’s home.

Click here to fill out a form to nominate a project in your area for Community Payback.

This month's 'Ofiicer Blog' featuring Vanessa Young PCSO 276

Hello, I am PCSO 276 VANESSA YOUNG and I work in Ferrybridge and Knottlingley. Due to my son just turning 15 yrs of age, I feel like i have got part of my own life back which is lovely. In my spare time I go to the gym and I am currently in training for a body building show in March 2011 to help raise money for Claire’s school of dance in Ferrybridge. I will be updating my patrol blog each week for the next month and I hope it gives you an insight into my role as a PCSO.

Week 1 Commencing 30th July 2010

Friday - Day shift.

Today I visited an address in Pontefract on arrest enquiries from another force.
I then did some high visibility patrols on my push bike in the Broomhill estate, Knottingley. We have had an increase in ASB (Anti Social Behaviour) in this area and much of my time was spent re-assuring the residents in this area.
From here I took the footpaths from Broomhill to the Warwick Estate regarding Fire hazard patrols and reported fly tipping to WMDC at the back of Throstle Farm Junior and Infant School.
I stopped for lunch with PC4843 Deakin who is the Ward manager for the Knottingley and Ferrybridge area’s. This was followed by foot patrols on the Warwick estate and on to Hill Top regarding some parking issues. The PACT priority areas were also patrolled and then I walked around the top end of Knottingley doing a door to door crime survey. This has been completed over the last few days to encourage residents to come forward with information regarding any ASB problems in their neighbourhood.

Saturday - Day shift

Commencing with cycle patrols to Knottingley after team the briefing. I printed off the Knottingley web site information to take to the drop in centre that I had organised.
PC4843 Deakin also accompanied me at the drop in centre held at the church on The Croft, Knottingley. The information received was collated and accessed and as a result I contacted WMDC ASBU (The council Anti Social Behaviour Unit) and passed some information on for further consideration / action to be taken. Thank you, to all the residents who took part in the survey.

Blue graffiti paint was reported on the Cherry Tree pub, the graffiti was considered offensive by the reporting person and painted over the same day.

I attended a further call of offensive graffiti on house windows in Ferrybridge, this had obviously been done by small children and luckily all the windows cleaned off as I removed it all with elbow grease and a Jiff cleaner!

We received a anonymous call from The Island stating that a party was under way and this linked in with complaints from the drop in centre from this morning. I created a log and went to the address where males in the address and the tenant were warned.

We then attended an address in relation to damage to a car in Knottingley. A log was created and our details left for the owner to make contact.

Another call from an anonymous person to say that the address with the party had continued and was getting worse. On arrival a lot of males were in the property and this resulted in one male getting arrested for Assaulting two Police Officers. Statements were obtained in relation to this incident and I worked overtime to complete my paperwork.

Sunday to follow

Monday - Day shift

After our team briefing I came out to Ferrybridge and commenced my cycle patrols. I attended Malvern Road re some parking issues, however on attending there were no problems evident.

I carried on to Marsh End, Aire Walk and The Island and carried out patrols here.
On Howards Fields I reported traveller’s site and spoke to the travellers who stated they would be here for a week. I updated the Police log with the necessary information.

I carried out Fire Hazard patrols where fly tipping was reported to WMDC, this was to the back of Throstle Farm junior and infant school on some waste land..

Checked the Green Bottle pub which has been closed down as attempts to set fire to it have occurred recently. This is on the Fire Hazard patrol list to check. New graffiti has been applied to the walls at the back, known tags (marks) of local youths.

Information was received about neighbours constantly arguing and visitors to an address and an intelligence report was submitted.

House to house was carried out for attempt burglary on a shop at Hill Top; this was carried out to no gain.

Action Meeting was today in Ferrybridge centre, this is always well attended. ASB letter drop has been organised for 13th August 2010 in a multi Agency approach

Tuesday - Afternoon shift

Cycle patrols around Aire Walk, The Island and Marsh end. Stopped and spoke to residents around the area.
House to house enquiries were carried out in relation to a local crime with no information being received.

Called down to Ferrybridge services to do routine patrols around the perimeter fence, as they are having problems with local males attending and carrying out thefts from vehicles.

I carried checks on a known male to see if he was staying at a particular property, on checking this out the building is currently derelict the information was passed back to the Officer involved.

Carried out routine patrols Broomhill estate all in order.

Hill Top shops and Malvern Road patrolled and there were no issues.

Ferrybridge patrols, I attended Vale Crescent and moved a group of youths on from the corner, one of them was over 18 and drinking.
Stop forms were filled in at the time on my blackberry.
About half an hour later a lady approached me in Ferrybridge to tell me there was a large group of youths on the corner of Vale Crescent, shouting and swearing and going into the road. She said that she nearly hit one in her car. A police log had been created and I attended with two WMDC Neighbourhood Patrollers. The group would not move on and I requested further officers to attend and assist me to disperse the group. As other officers arrived one male was arrested for assaulting two Police officers. The rest of the group then moved off. Intelligence reports were submitted.

Patrols of The Island and Marsh End were carried out and Intelligence information submitted.

I carried out joint working with the WMDC Neighbourhood Patrol officers and attended some WMDC jobs out of my area.

Later in the shift I joined other officers in our van and attended calls in the area until the end of my shift.

Wednesday - Afternoon shift

After the team briefing I carried out Joint working with Neighbourhood Patroller Nigel Swift.

Carried out routine PACT area patrols fro Knottingley and Ferrybridge.

I attended a call to Spawd Bone Lane stating that a male was walking around pointing a gun into peoples windows.
The area was searched and we went into the High school grounds to see if this male had gone in. The male was found but it was not a gun he had it was an Ariel to find his Falcon. He had let his bird go on Prince of Wales pit stacks and it had not returned.

Foot patrols carried out at 9pm in Ferrybridge, I spoke to a young male regarding his swearing outside a shop.

Intelligence was submitted as a known male from Knottingley was seen on High Street, Ferrybridge, the male was known to have links to drugs / drug dealing but has not been seen in this area before.

More information was received regarding a Ferrybridge male supplying alcohol to minors. Intelligence was submitted as this male is also known for ASB in the Ferrybridge area.

Thursday - Afternoon shift

After a team briefing with our Inspector I carried our foot patrols in Ferrybridge. As I got off the bus outside the old Magnet pub I saw a male who was just going to start etching his name on the bus shelter, the sharp implement was taken off him and two stop forms were completed on my blackberry. Both youths advised about their conduct and Intelligence was submitted.

At 5.45pm at the entrance of the sub way on the High Street side 10 youths were gathered, some of the older youths were drinking and I asked them to move onto the park to the shelter. Stop forms were filled in on my blackberry as I followed them to the park.

At this time the PACT meeting was due to start. I attended the Pact meeting as did PC 1217 Banks.
After the Pact meeting I carried on with cycle patrols and after my meal break in Ferrybridge I went back to the park. Here I witnessed young children on their push bikes on the wrong side of the road unaware of the danger of on coming vehicles. I spoke with five children, one had recently moved to Ferrybridge, the rest were from Willow Park, Pontefract. Given their age and the of 10yrs and 11yrs. I took their details and will pass them to the PCSO for Willow Park as some of the children admitted that their parents did not know that they were in Ferrybridge.

I radioed in and volunteered to attend a report in Ferry bridge where ASB (Anti Social Behaviour) had taken place and also possible damage to a car that had been witnessed. The car was not damaged and Intelligence was submitted regarding the youths responsible.

At 9.10 pm a mother in Ferrybridge stopped me telling me about an incident which took place earlier in the day that caused her son to be distressed.
I created a Police log for this incident and attended the address. This resulted in a crime being recorded and youths being spoken to.
I later made my way back to the station to complete my paperwork and to update the crime.

I finished my shift at midnight but stayed on late to complete my reports before I went home.

Week 2 Commencing 10th August 2010

Tuesday - Day shift

After the team briefing I had to do some paperwork and reports.
I then carried out foot patrols to Ferrybridge where I collected my bicycle. I attended a Police log in Ferrybridge for damage to a shed.

I attended Marsh End to the traveller’s site on Howards Fields where seven further caravans had arrived on that day. I spoke to a lady on site who grew up in Knottingley and pointed out houses where she had lived and the school in which she used to go. I gave her WMDC number for an enquiry she had that was not a police matter.

Then I cycled back down to Ferrybridge checked the park and High street then returned on my cycle and started to make my way back to police station as I had an appointment at the office.
At 2.30 pm I was back at the station having a working lunch while completing my paperwork prior to going off duty.

Wednesday - Day shift

It was paper work to start the day and then out on foot patrol. I had picked up a few Police logs that required attention and set out to deal with those first, in the Knottingley area.

As I got to Ferrybridge to collect my bicycle I noticed some work being carried out with asbestos roofing. I was concerned for people’s health, including the workers and I rang WMDC to explain the circumstances. WMDC later updated me with regard to this matter and thanked me for the information, they had accessed the situation and given appropriate advice.

I attended a call received on my radio to attend at Pinewood Place where it was reported that 15youths were fighting. On arriving just after other officers had arrived I was cancelled as the matter had been dealt with.

I carried on with my cycle patrols and attended an address on the Warwick estate regarding a theft of house keys. On speaking with the reporting female it turned out to be a prank by her friends.

Fire Hazard patrols were then conducted around the estates and footpaths.

I carried out foot patrols around the perimeter of Ferrybridge Services and while there took my meal break.

I was contacted on my radio while mealing and asked to attended a log in Knottingley. On arrival there was no answer to knocking so I left my details on a calling card and carried on with cycle patrols onto Marsh End, The Island and Aire Walk.

At 2 pm I was in Ferrybridge on cycle patrols of the Pact areas. Some youths were seen but not doing anything wrong at the time.

Thursday - Day shift

Cycle patrols along the canal to Aire Walk, The Island and Marsh End in Knottingley. I spoke with WDH (Wakefield District Housing) Estate Officer whilst in this area and gained some knowledge of what will be happening in the future.

Fire Hazard patrols made along the footpaths around the Broomhill estate onto the Warwick Estate and including the back of Plasmore.

I patrolled the Northfield Estate including around the shops and also Hill Top shopping area and Malvern Road for Parking issues.

Patrols again around Marsh End,The Island and Aire Walk.
From information received I witnessed a male driving a car who was said to be disqualified I used my radio to make others in the area aware. The car was stopped and checked out and any further work was carried out by NPT Police officers.

I gathered information having witnessed a known male walking around the area looking suspicious and noted his description in the event of any crimes being committed in this area.

An address in Knottingley was reported to me for Fly tipping and the Environmental team had already been informed and are dealing.

I telephoned a resident who is having trouble with local youths and I spoke at length about the situation which will be receiving appropriate attention.

After that I continued my cycle patrols and saw a male I needed to speak to. I had advised him regarding his behaviour which was not improving and he agreed and will stay away from certain areas. This will be monitored.

I returned to the station then to complete my reports and my officer blog for the NPT web site before the end of my shift.

Friday - Afternoon shift

This evening we carried out joint working with ASBU (Anti Social Behaviour Unit) from the council and posted Crime survey letters in 300 homes in the area of Aire Walk, Aire Street, Marsh End, The Island, West Ings Estate, The Croft and Cow Lane for a crime survey re Anti Social Behaviour in these areas. Many residents were spoken to as we delivered these surveys.

Attended a Police log with a representative from the ASB unit on Aire Walk.

I then continued with foot patrol on my own to Ferrybridge Services regarding a recent speight of vehicle crime. While on patrol in this area I saw a female who is known to me for conning money out of the drivers. She was approached and advised to leave the area which she then did. No offences became apparent at that time.

I joined other officers in the NPT van later on and attended at calls followed by completing my reports back at the station prior to the end of my shift.

Saturday - Afternoon shift

Patrols commenced in Ferrybridge where I spoke to a local resident regarding a personal problem. I was then directed to a report of a bill board that was hanging dangerously over a road causing vehicles to swerve.

Spoke with local male who wanted information from me, from this intel submitted regarding a problem personal to him.

Attended Cmu log to a BILL BOARD hanging off and blowing in the wind over the road causing cars to swerve. I set about ripping the poster into smaller sections to try and make it safe, on doing this the wind was getting up and on some occasions I was like a human kite! Much to the amusement of the local Rockware Social Club, but on seeing me struggle and having had a bit of a joke they did come over and help a damsel in distress. It was difficult to tear off. I thanked them for their assistance and called WMDC rapid response to collect the poster as there was a lot of it.

Fire Hazard patrols made around Broomhill estate behind Plasmor and onto the Warwick estate.

I then attended two Police logs in Ferrybridge for youths causing problems at Ashdown Court. On my arrival the youths had already gone. On looking in the storage area graffiti is on the walls and ceiling relating to the youths in Ferrybridge. I submitted an intelligence report relating to this and also got in touch with the owners of the building. This is an area that will be receiving attention whenever possible.

A further call was attended on Sowgate lane regarding noisy cars, however when I attended it all was quiet. I spoke to parents at an address all was in order.

Cycle patrols of The Quarry. Some youths were in this area but not doing anything and none were known to Police. I stopped and chatted with them for a while and got to know them a little better and then continued patrols in Aire Walk, The Island, Marsh End, then the Hill Top area.

Then onto FERRYBRIDGE and the High Street a PACT priority area. (Partners And Communities Together). Nine known local youths were stopped and moved on from a grassed area on Ashdown Court to a bench on the High Street. Stop forms were completed. After leaving the group one or two of them tipped up the can banks. I re-attended but the youths had left and could not be identified. Re-assurance given to caller and local shop.

Finally returned to complete my reports to the end of my shift.

Sunday and Monday

I was deployed onto a scene guard in Pontefract where very sadly a body was found in a house fire.
