New Officer Joins the Team

The NPT are delighted to welcome PCSO Darrin Thompson to the team. Darrin will be working with PCSO Andy Wade initially but will then be covering Wharfedale and in particular Menston during PCSO Hodgsons absence.

Watch Your Tools!

Crime in Menston has remained low over the past month but it would appear that somebody is particularly targeting the sort of things we all keep in our garages and sheds. Two houses on West Chevin Road had their sheds broken into and tools were taken. The building sites at both Menston Hall and the new Children's Centre at Kirkland's have also had the site cabins broken into and tools stolen. One further incident involved a van belonging to a contractor at the Hare & Hounds Public House - the vehicle was entered and again tools were taken. The people committing these crimes must have some form of transport as many of the items stolen were both bulky and heavy. Please be vigilant in your neighbourhood and report any suspicious vehicles or people.

Mobile Phone & Data Technology Whilst Out On The BEAT

All of our Police Officers and PCSOs on the Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) in the West Yorkshire Police, have been issued with 'Blackberry' mobile phones with full email messaging and data transfer facilities. This enables them to send and receive important operational information relating to their work whilst on patrol in your community. Officers are able to immediately update our Intelligence and Operations Departments and respond to new information received whilst out on patrol. The Blackberries will be in addition to the traditional Police radios.

"So if you see an officer busily texting whilst standing on a street corner or sitting in a police car, please don't assume that they are arranging for their tea, they will actually be gainfully employed updating the systems in our organisation".

THE FAIFAX CLUB - MENSTON - NUMBER PLATE INITIATIVE

PCOS's Andy Wade & Darrin Thompson held a Number Plate Initiative at The Fairfax Club on Saturday 19th June between 9.30 - 12:00pm.

18 vehicles attended and had their number plate screws replaced with anti tamper proof screws.

Other planned initiatives to be held in Burley and Menston will be advertised shortly.

THE NUMBER’S UP FOR THIEVES PLEASE HELP US STOP THIS CRIME

The West Yorkshire Police are committed to tackling car crime. The stealing of registration plates from cars raises concerns both for the Police and the car owner if the registration plates are then used in crime.

To combat this Airedale and North Bradford Police are offering to change the standard screws used to hold most plates onto the car with security screws. This process takes approximately 10 minutes of your time but will help to protect you and your vehicle from becoming a target.

Summer is here!!!

It is that wonderful time of year again where we can go outside and enjoy our gardens, planting new shrubs and dining outdoors but please continue to be vigilant and keep your doors/windows secure and locked if your back is turned on them. We did have a couple of incidents last year in Menston where on 2 occasions peoples houses were burgled as they were in their gardens. On one occasion the suspect had silently walked within feet of a lady who was kneeling beside a flower bed and entered her property through the open front door stealing valuable and sentimental items of jewellery from the top of a cupboard in the hallway. The lady was not aware of the suspects presence until he/she was long gone. If you require any Crime Prevention Advice please call Rachael Hodgson on 01274 475301

Speed Indication Display System

We are delighted to announce that the SID - Speed Indication Display - has arrived and will be put to use in various locations all over Menston Village on a regular basis. Many many thanks to Menston Parish Council who have made this long term project possible through funding the SID, PCSO'S Rachael Hodgson and Darrin Thompson are very grateful for the support that the Parish Council have given. Speeding is a huge problem in Menston and this piece of kit is a huge deterrent to 'Would be speeders' and will educate motorists on road safety.

Parking on Derry Hill junction with Walker Road.

After receiving several complaints from residents regarding the parking on this junction vehicles will now be issued with Fixed Penalty Tickets should they be causing an obstruction. Parking on this corner is dangerous to motorists coming up Derry Hill and motorists wishing to turn left when coming out of Walker Road are unable to make this manoeuvre

Parking around Menston Primary School

The Police have received several complaints over the last couple of weeks regarding inconsiderate parking around Menston Primary School particularly on St Peters Way. Having been at school at finishing time today it is quite apparent that parents - especially those who are arriving late - are abandoning their vehicles anywhere and everywhere causing obstructions to other road users and most importantly posing a danger to young children coming out of the school. Please look around you before turning off the engine and consider whether it is safe to park - Fixed Penalty Tickets WILL be issued for road offences and obstruction. Thank you.

"How does a burglar's mind work?"

Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured:

side gates open
accessible windows open
ladders left out, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible windows
garden tools available to force entry
untrimmed hedges or high fences preventing natural surveillance

Each of these makes access to the building far simpler and is an indication to the prospective burglar that it's worth a second look.

Residents of multi occupancy dwellings or flats should be mindful not to grant entry to people via an entry phone system, if they do not know them, and to be cautious of people seeking to 'tailgate' them into buildings.

The question is, are the occupants in?
milk bottles or parcels on the doorstep
newspapers and mail in the letter box
unlit houses after dark
all windows shut in very hot weather

These are signs telling the burglar that he is unlikely to be disturbed in the course of his work. Naturally, circumstances may arise when such situations may be unavoidable. If we can take measures that tell the burglar that this building is too difficult or too risky a target, he will hopefully move on.

Community Speedwatch

05/07/2010 - 16:10hrs-17:20hrs speedwatch undertaken on Bingley Road (junction with Cleasby Road). 22 vehicles exceeding 30mph.

19/07/2010 - 16:20hrs - 17:25hrs speedwatch undertaken on Bradford Road (junction with Burley Road). 11 vehicles exceeding 30mph.

28/07/2010 - 17:10hrs - 18:00hrs speedwatch undertaken on Bingley Road (junction with Cleasby Road). 13 vehicles exceeding 30mph

PCSO Thompson will be conducting more Speedwatches in the local area over the coming months. Anyone caught exceeding the speed limit will be sent a warning letter informing them on the error of their ways and advising them that next time it may not just be a warning they receive.

Many more similar operations are planned throughout the ward area and we would urge drivers to be aware of speed limits and drive appropriately.
Anyone wishing to volunteer to be involved in Speedwatch is encouraged to contact ourselves via phone on -01274 475301 or at: hanpt1@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.

Think! – Don’t Use Your Mobile Phone Whilst Driving!!

You will be liable to a £60 fine and a 3 point endorsement on your driving licence if found committing this offence.

Follow these simple rules to promote safe driving.

Pull over safely before answering or making calls
Purchase a bluetooth

If you have any information about any crime in your area please contact West Yorkshire Police on: 0845 6060606 or Crime Stoppers on: 0800 555 111.

Mark your property

Marking your property is one of the simplest and most effective ways of protecting your possessions.

Marking your valuable property with your name or address is easy and effective. If your property is ever stolen, it makes it more difficult to sell on, and it makes it easier for the police to trace your belongings back to you if found.

West Yorkshire Police recommend two ways to mark your property:

Engraving or punching your address and postcode into your property
marking antiques or valuable property with an ultra-violet marker
How to do it
For the first method, use a fine drill or sharp-pointed tool (inexpensive permanent marking kits can be purchased at most home improvement stores) to neatly mark your equipment with your address and postcode.

For bicycles, mowers, engines and other heavy metal objects, you can use a punching tool and a hammer to mark your address and post code.

For the second method, you can purchase permanent ultra-violet (UV) marker pens and mark the same information on more valuable possessions. The marks will be invisible to the naked eye.

However, UV marks will fade with time and should be redone periodically.

When police recover stolen property, they search them for any markings that might identify the owners, so this is a good way to ensure that you can get your property back should it ever be stolen.

Sneak in Burglaries

Next time you pop inside to get a glass of juice or answer the phone, please bear in mind that It takes less that 5 seconds for a burglar to reach through your open door and take your car keys/mobile/purse. STAY SAFE. Remember if you're travelling abroad this summer to make sure your house is fully locked and secured, ask a neighbour if they'd mind closing your curtains and perhaps activate a timer switch so it looks as though someone is home. Sometimes just little things like closing your garden gate can be a deterrent to possible burglars.

Keeping your home safe.

Reduce the risk of your home being burgled by making sure you’ve taken these simple (and often inexpensive) precautions.

Most burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves. In two out of 10 burglaries, they don’t even have to use force - they get in through an open door or window. So fit strong locks to your doors and windows and make sure you always keep them fully locked.

If you are replacing or fitting new doors and windows, get ones that are certified to British Standard BS7950 (windows) or PAS 24-1 (doors). Look at your home through a burglar’s eyes.

How would you get in if you’d forgotten your keys? If you can get in, so can a burglar.

Are there places where they could break in without being seen?

Would they have to make a lot of noise by breaking glass?

Be aware of Lottery Scams

There has recently been an increase in people receiving letters in the post saying that they have won a substantial amount of money on the Lottery. The letter explains how you have come to win this money and how to claim for your winnings.
Accompanying the letter is a Payment process requesting personal details including bank details. DO NOT FILL THIS IN.
If you receive any of these letters telephone the following number and report the matter to Consumer direct on 0845 4040506 or via the internet on www.consumerdirect.gov.uk.

Never reveal your bank details unless you are absolutely sure who you are giving the details to.

Please be aware of various scam/begging letters and emails that are currently being sent around our area. Please do not respond to them or ring any telephone numbers detailed on the literature.
