Smiley face for drivers in Menston

A new Speed Indicator Device has been kindly bought by Menston Parish Council for the use of the local police to use in the village. It is mobile and can be moved to suitable locations, where required. The device can be set at various speeds, it shows the exact travelling speed together with a smiley face if the vehicle is driving under the limit or a sad face if the driver is over the limit. The local Neighbourhood Policing Team will use it in conjunction with Speedwatch. Offending drivers will be sent letters advising them of their speed.

The picture shows Councillor Peter Finlay Chairman of Menston Parish Council, with Police Segeant Jo Beecroft and PCSO Darrin Thompson both of the Wharferdale Neighbourhood Policing Team with the matrix device.

Mobile Phone & Data Technology Whilst Out On The BEAT

All of our Police Officers and PCSOs on the Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) in the West Yorkshire Police, have been issued with 'Blackberry' mobile phones with full email messaging and data transfer facilities. This enables them to send and receive important operational information relating to their work whilst on patrol in your community. Officers are able to immediately update our Intelligence and Operations Departments and respond to new information received whilst out on patrol. The Blackberries will be in addition to the traditional Police radios.

"So if you see an officer busily texting whilst standing on a street corner or sitting in a police car, please don't assume that they are arranging for their tea, they will actually be gainfully employed updating the systems in our organisation".

Parking on Derry Hill junction with Walker Road.

After receiving several complaints from residents regarding the parking on this junction vehicles will now be issued with Fixed Penalty Tickets should they be causing an obstruction. Parking on this corner is dangerous to motorists coming up Derry Hill and motorists wishing to turn left when coming out of Walker Road are unable to make this manoeuvre

"How does a burglar's mind work?"

Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured:

side gates open
accessible windows open
ladders left out, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible windows
garden tools available to force entry
untrimmed hedges or high fences preventing natural surveillance

Each of these makes access to the building far simpler and is an indication to the prospective burglar that it's worth a second look.

Residents of multi occupancy dwellings or flats should be mindful not to grant entry to people via an entry phone system, if they do not know them, and to be cautious of people seeking to 'tailgate' them into buildings.

The question is, are the occupants in?
milk bottles or parcels on the doorstep
newspapers and mail in the letter box
unlit houses after dark
all windows shut in very hot weather

These are signs telling the burglar that he is unlikely to be disturbed in the course of his work. Naturally, circumstances may arise when such situations may be unavoidable. If we can take measures that tell the burglar that this building is too difficult or too risky a target, he will hopefully move on.

Mark your property

Marking your property is one of the simplest and most effective ways of protecting your possessions.

Marking your valuable property with your name or address is easy and effective. If your property is ever stolen, it makes it more difficult to sell on, and it makes it easier for the police to trace your belongings back to you if found.

West Yorkshire Police recommend two ways to mark your property:

Engraving or punching your address and postcode into your property
marking antiques or valuable property with an ultra-violet marker
How to do it
For the first method, use a fine drill or sharp-pointed tool (inexpensive permanent marking kits can be purchased at most home improvement stores) to neatly mark your equipment with your address and postcode.

For bicycles, mowers, engines and other heavy metal objects, you can use a punching tool and a hammer to mark your address and post code.

For the second method, you can purchase permanent ultra-violet (UV) marker pens and mark the same information on more valuable possessions. The marks will be invisible to the naked eye.

However, UV marks will fade with time and should be redone periodically.

When police recover stolen property, they search them for any markings that might identify the owners, so this is a good way to ensure that you can get your property back should it ever be stolen.

Sneak in Burglaries

Next time you pop inside to get a glass of juice or answer the phone, please bear in mind that It takes less that 5 seconds for a burglar to reach through your open door and take your car keys/mobile/purse. STAY SAFE. Remember if you're travelling abroad this summer to make sure your house is fully locked and secured, ask a neighbour if they'd mind closing your curtains and perhaps activate a timer switch so it looks as though someone is home. Sometimes just little things like closing your garden gate can be a deterrent to possible burglars.

Keeping your home safe.

Reduce the risk of your home being burgled by making sure you’ve taken these simple (and often inexpensive) precautions.

Most burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves. In two out of 10 burglaries, they don’t even have to use force - they get in through an open door or window. So fit strong locks to your doors and windows and make sure you always keep them fully locked.

If you are replacing or fitting new doors and windows, get ones that are certified to British Standard BS7950 (windows) or PAS 24-1 (doors). Look at your home through a burglar’s eyes.

How would you get in if you’d forgotten your keys? If you can get in, so can a burglar.

Are there places where they could break in without being seen?

Would they have to make a lot of noise by breaking glass?

Be aware of Lottery Scams

There has recently been an increase in people receiving letters in the post saying that they have won a substantial amount of money on the Lottery. The letter explains how you have come to win this money and how to claim for your winnings.
Accompanying the letter is a Payment process requesting personal details including bank details. DO NOT FILL THIS IN.
If you receive any of these letters telephone the following number and report the matter to Consumer direct on 0845 4040506 or via the internet on www.consumerdirect.gov.uk.

Never reveal your bank details unless you are absolutely sure who you are giving the details to.

Please be aware of various scam/begging letters and emails that are currently being sent around our area. Please do not respond to them or ring any telephone numbers detailed on the literature.
