Chris catches the culprits (13.7.10)

At 11.30pm on Saturday 10 July PCSO Chris Long was on high bike patrol in the Morley area with PCSO Tom Doolan. He was flagged down by a member of public on Ingle Avenue, who reported four males who were drunk in the street and smashing wing mirrors off cars.

A local resident had witnessed his neighbour’s car’s driver’s side wing mirror being kicked off by one of the youths. He explained to PCSO Long that there was a female with the males, and one of the males looked in a rage, and threw a can of beer at her. He told PCSO Long that the males had made off in the direction of Ingle Crescent. PCSO Long alerted PCSO Doolan to assist him in an area search for the males.
The youths were described as all white males, approximately 15-17years of age.

PCSO Long sighted two males stood on Ingle Crescent who matched the descriptions of two of the four males, the males were smoking and said that they had been having a party and had been drinking, also saying they had not left the house all evening.
PCSO Long went back to the damaged motor vehicle where another member of the public pointed out another vehicle which had a wing mirror smashed off further up Ingle Avenue.
There was blood on the vehicle around the area of the damage.

Along with his colleague PCSO Tom Doolan, PCSO Long checked the hands of each youth. One had a deep cut on his hand and there were rags in the kitchen of his house soaked in blood, he stated he had cut himself on a beer can.

PC Gareth Bennett was asked to attend and speak with the injured youth, who later confessed to committing the damage on one of the vehicles by punching the wing mirror off, leading to the cut on his hand. All other youths denied knowledge of the damage on the other car.

Morley NPT is working hard to tackle anti-social behaviour in the Morley area and these officers were pleased to be able to apprehend the youth who will now be charged with Criminal Damage.

Anti Social Behaviour & ASBO's

What is Anti-Social Behaviour?
A course of conduct, committed by an individual, which causes another, who is not resident within the same household, to suffer harassment, alarm and distress.

The behaviour involved can consist of any persistent act which results in the quality of life of another being affected in some way. The type of incident and its effect upon an individual can and does vary with each person.

How the ASB Unit can assist you
Members of the public are able to discuss any persistent or serious anti-social behaviour with the unit's officer PC Claire Thornton or the Leeds City Council ASB Unit. Both units work hand in hand to combat reports of this nature.

Neighbourhood Watch
Establishing a Neighbourhood Watch in your area will not only reduce crime but reduce the opportunity for crime to occur. Neighbourhood Watch encourages closer communities with residents looking out for each other's property.

It's not time consuming just a few like-minded residents getting together can make such a difference in any area. It lets the offender know that residents are supporting one another and there is no place for then in your community.

For further information please contact Diane Winder Divisional Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator at Morley Police Station on 0113 2382045.

Domestic Burglaries

The Morley NPT area tends to suffer an above average number of domestic burglaries where entry has been gained through an unlocked or insecure door or an open window. Although currently recording less than one domestic burglary per day, a high percentage of those are committed by this method.

The advice is quite simple:

Please keep your doors and windows locked, even when you are in the property. Consider fitting a door chime to the door to alert you when the door is opened just in case you forget to lock it.

Take care not to leave items such as handbags, car and house keys, mobile phones etc on display as these may become a potential target.

In addition to the Sneak-ins, there have recently been a rise in burglaries being committed where the means of gaining entry to the property has been by way of breaking the Euro Cylinder Lock, the type of lock commonly used on uPVC doors (including Patio and French Doors) as well as some Composite doors.
If your property is fitted with such a lock, we suggest that you consider taking up the 'No obligation' Security Survey carried out by our partners, CASAC (Community Action & Support Against Crime) who will arrange for one of their Safety Engineers to call and advise accordingly on the latest security devices available to combat such attacks and improve your general security. To arrange an appointment please contact CASAC on 0113 3805650.

If you do not have an alarm system fitted, please consider getting one fitted.

The 'Bogus Caller'
We have recently seen an increase in the 'Bogus Caller' type of burglary, targeting the elderly / vulnerable members of our local community. Unfortunately this type of crime does occur with bogus callers varying in appearance and using a number of excuses to try and trick their way into people's homes.
The Water Board Official is one that is often used (checking for coloured water due to a problem in the area) or they are from the Council etc.
The aim of the bogus caller is to try and talk their way into your home, after all if they can walk through your front door after receiving an invite from you, why should they go to all the trouble of having to break into your property.

If you have elderly relatives or neighbours, frequently remind them of the dangers of Bogus Callers.
Remember.....
Before you open the door check to see who it is by looking through your front window or by using a door viewer if you have one.
· Consider asking a neighbour, relative or warden to help deal with the caller.
· Only open the door when you have put the chain on.
· Get a good look at their clothing, some official callers will have a uniform bearing their company or organisation logo.
· Utility services may operate a password system; contact your Branch to find out more.
· Suggest that the caller should come back later; you can then check their story by telephoning the organisation or company they claim to represent.
· Check any phone number they give you in your own telephone directory. Do not rely on the number on their card; it may be the number of their partner in crime.
· Always lock the back door before opening the front or vice versa. Bogus callers sometimes work in pairs; one caller could be distracting you at the front and the other sneaking in at the back.
· Let the police and your neighbours know if you have had a suspicious caller at the door.
· Locks and chains are only a deterrent if they are used!
· Emergency situations can arise; do not leave the door chain on all of the time as this may cause a delay. Only put the chain on before answering the door.
Remember if in doubt KEEP THEM OUT.

Bogus callers in all shapes and sizes, including children, are at work. Please do not let them trick you into letting them in. If you do not have a door chain or viewer consider having one fitted. Contact your local Crime Reduction Officer who can often arrange for them to be fitted free of charge.

Vehicle Crime
The number of incidents relating to theft from motor vehicles, can be reduced quite easily by remembering to remove ALL items from the vehicle whenever possible. This should include the Satellite Navigation cradles, making sure window suction marks are also removed from the windscreen.

To avoid the Theft of your vehicle, fit an additional quality steering lock such as the Disklok available from Morley, Holbeck & Millgarth Police Stations at the following prices: -
Small Disklok £45 each (r.r.p. £79.99)
Medium & Large Diskloks £65 each. (r.r.p. £99.99)
(see also Crime Prevention Products by clicking on link) http://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/WYPNPT/area.asp?id=44#794

Burglaries of Sheds & Garages

Although we continue to reduce the number of burglaries to sheds and garages within the Morley NPT area, they are a ‘perennial’ problem, which often increases around springtime.
The value of property stored in the sheds and garages is often much more than people imagine. Bicycles, lawnmowers and power tools are among the most common items.
Please review the level of security of your sheds & garages and if necessary take steps to improve the security.
Secure the hinges with coach bolts, as the standard screws are often easily withdrawn.
Fit quality locking devices such as the Shed Bar or the Garage Guardian, both of which are available to residents of Morley at discounted prices from Morley Police Station.

Samples of the security devices can be seen attached to the 'Shed/Garage trailer exhibit situated directly outside Morley Police Station. Remember to mark all your property with your postcode and house number.

Special features of the Security Shed on display outside Morley Police Station include:

Security Hinges – coach bolted on to frame.
Internally glazed security windows.
Solid frame with vertical spars set at 12” intervals.
Padlock protector.
