Divisional Profile

North West Leeds Division is based in the north and west of Leeds.
It stretches to the edge of the city centre in the south incorporating the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University and a large youthful student population in communities including Burley, Headingley and Woodhouse.

To the north it reaches Otley and includes the county’s gateway to the world – Leeds/Bradford International Airport which is continuing to expand in both international and domestic air traffic. In the west of the division are the busy communities of Pudsey, Armley and Bramley as well as Farsley, Calverley and Rodley.

Home to Yorkshire County Cricket and the Leeds Rhinos, the division’s population is boosted regularly by the large influx of people visiting the Headingley Stadium for rugby league and test cricket matches. There is also an increasing commercial and leisure sector with new sports complexes, retail parks, leisure centres, cinemas and night-clubs being attracted to the area.

It also houses one of the largest remand prisons in the country at HMP Leeds.

Welcome to the Neighbourhood Policing website for North West Leeds Division. I am Chief Superintendent Ian Whitehouse, the Divisional Commander. It is my responsibility to deliver the best possible policing service to anyone who lives in, works in or visits our Division.

To do this I have designed our services so that Neighbourhood Policing is at the heart of everything we do. This means local Officers
and staff having local ownership of your problems.

On the left of the screen you can see our Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPT’s) that work right across the Division. You will also see details of when your next public forum is to be held, known as Police and Community Together (PACT) meetings. We really want you to become involved in your neighbourhood. Your input is vital to our work. It is the strengthening of this bond that will ensure you get the policing service you need and expect.

Did you know that every month we deal with around 6500 calls for our service in the North West Leeds Area? When you break that down further we deal with over 1100 emergency calls where we aim to be there in 15 minutes, around 1500 where we aim to be there in an hour and the remainder we aim to deal with as quickly as possible, but no later than within 4 hours. We actually get to emergencies within the time frame that we set ourselves in 94% of cases and to priority calls within the hour in 97% of cases. This for me is reflected in what you say if you have had to call for our service. Invariably you say that our response was excellent and that’s the way we aim to keep it.

I mention this, not only to highlight how many calls we deal with but to touch on a real important issue and that is how well we actually make that assessment of your call.

In recent times we have heard lots of reports about anti-social behaviour and the impact it has on people’s lives. I’m determined to address this which is why I have invested heavily in ensuring we have sufficient resources to deal with the here and now emergencies, but that we have sufficient staff in Neighbourhood Policing to tackle the issues of most concern to you.

To really get to the heart of your issues we need your help. We need you to speak to us about your problems, attend your PACT meetings and to work alongside your Neighbourhood Policing Teams to resolve the issues of most concern in your Community. If you do I promise that we will deal with any calls with the right response at the right time.

You can find out about specific crime information for your Local Neighbourhood from the Beatcrime information on the West Yorkshire Police Authority website.

In the meantime those of you who have contacted us are telling us that we are doing a good job. None of this is possible without your help and support. Please take and follow our crime prevention advice. If we continue to work together we will make your neighbourhood a more desirable place to live, work and visit.

Remember we are in this together, If you see it and think its suspicious, report it, If you hear it and know its not right, tell us and if you want to really make a difference get in touch with your neighbourhood policing teams and discuss ways in which we can tackle your local issues.
