Divisional Profile

Home of the famous liquorice Pontefract cakes, the Wakefield District Division follows the merger of Wakefield and Pontefract Divisions on April 23, 2001.

The division includes the city of Wakefield and major towns of Pontefract, Castleford, South Kirkby, South Elmsall, Ossett, Hemsworth and Normanton. More than 310,000 people live in the division, which has always historically had Wakefield as it's administrative centre. The area is 130 square miles and has an ethnic minority population of about 2%.

The division has excellent motorway links, intersecting the M1 and M62, and the Westgate railway station links to the mainline routes, both north and southbound. There are three main retail parks, Freeport at Castleford and the Ridings Shopping Centre and Cathedral Retail Park in Wakefield. Tourist attractions include Pugneys Country Park and Wintersett Reservoir, Wakefield Cathedral, the Nostell Priory, The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The National Coal Mining Museum, Xscape, Pontefract and Sandal Castles

The division also contains two prisons, a women's prison at Newhall and a maximum security prison in Wakefield. Sport features strongly in the area with the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Featherstone Rovers and Castleford Tigers Rugby League grounds together with Leeds United Reserves and Emley Town football clubs

West Yorkshire Police Headquarters and the Force Training and Development Centre at Bishopgarth are also based within the Division.

Chief Superintendent Mark Callaghan

I am Chief Superintendent Marc Callaghan, the Commander of Wakefield Division and I am delighted to welcome you to the Wakefield Neighbourhood Policing web page.

I am fully committed to delivering an excellent Policing service across the whole of Wakefield District. Last March saw the launch of the Policing pledge. This has been widely publicised at both local and national level, but I really want to stress to you that it really is an important change in the way that we Police.

It harks back to the time when you could rely on your local bobby to deal with your local problems and keep you informed. I have made a short video which you can see on this page of what the Policing pledge will mean to every resident of Wakefield. I hope you have heard of our PACT (Partners and Communities together) meetings. We now have 44 separate meetings taking place on average every 6 weeks and you are welcome to attend to share your views and help us to deliver a truly local service.

I am also absolutely determined that people who commit crime and blight the lives of our communities will not benefit from their behaviour. To this end I have created a Proceeds of Crime team to use recent legislation in a creative and innovative way to tackle those people head on.

In the past 12 months the courts in Wakefield have taken £315,000 off local criminals. Some of that money comes back to Wakefield Police and is used to tackle local problems and keep communities safe. To see further information about the most recent seizures please log onto the Wakefield Express crime file webpage and click the “why should they link”. I am determined to raise your confidence in what we do. I want you to know that if you need to contact us that you will receive an excellent service that is personal to you and based upon your individual needs. If we fall short of this promise then please let me know so that I can deal with the matter and we can learn from the experience.

Last, but not least recorded crime in Wakefield continues to fall and I am immensely proud of our achievements so far. However we will not sit on our laurels. I am interested to hear from anyone who can help in the fight against crime whatever form that might take. If you have any information that may help you can contact your local Neighbourhood Policing team who will be happy to take your call or crime stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
