Police in Halifax are urging residents to be on their guard against a telephone scam operating in the area.
Elderly residents in particular have been contacted by phone by people claiming to be from banks or organisations claiming to supply grants on behalf of the government.
Callers have been claiming people were entitled to Government grants subject to a fee being paid to a third party organisation.
Another tactic that has been used by the callers is trying to extract bank account details and card numbers in order for the recipient to be paid a £1,000 bank overcharge, subject to a 10% fee.
Sergeant Andrew Carlin from the Halifax Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:
“If something sounds too good to be true then it is.”
“I would urge everyone to always exercise caution when giving out important financial information down the phone.”
Both scams appear to be originating from Pakistan.
