Exceptional Service Recognised In Kirklees

Friday 6 November 2009

Bravery, commitment, dedication and professionalism will be recognised at a special awards ceremony for Kirklees Police officers, Special Constables, Police staff, volunteers and members of the public on Monday, 9 November 2009.

Selected officers and staff from across the Division will be rewarded for ‘going the extra mile’ in the line of duty and will be presented awards by the Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent John Robins.

The special ceremony held at the Galpharm Stadium in Huddersfield will see over a hundred officers acknowledged for demonstrating the highest standards in dealing with challenging situations.

Members of the public whose actions showed compassion, bravery and selflessness will also receive awards of commendation.

Among the teams and individuals picking up commendations are the Huddersfield officers who in September of this year attended a report of a man armed with two knives holding a baby and making threats to the public and Police in the Bradley Mills area. With courage and calmness they worked as a team to protect the public and each other ensuring the man was arrested.

Also being commended for his actions is PC Paul Wood of the Spen Neighbourhood Policing Team. He has been recognised for his work during the investigation involving Jess the dog who had been stolen from outside a local supermarket on Northgate in Cleckheaton and was later discovered dead in a beck at the Mann Dam on Sunday 18 January. CCTV was released by police at the time and a 25 year old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

Receiving a Chief Constable’s Commendation at the event is Kirklees Chief Inspector Ian Gayles. He will pick up the accolade in recognition for his exceptional and professional work conducted during the search for Shannon Matthews in Dewsbury. He was a Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector at the time and provided vital assistance to the investigation team whilst simultaneously providing reassurance and support to the local community. The complex investigation resulted in the successful recovery of Shannon Matthews and prosecution of those responsible for her kidnapping and false imprisonment.

In the public commendations, a teenager who took control of a car being driven by his grandfather who lost consciousness at the wheel is being acknowledged for his quick thinking and bravery. The incident occurred almost a year ago in the Waterloo area of Huddersfield. He prevented what could have been a much more serious incident, and showed remarkable courage throughout a traumatic incident.

Kirklees Police Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent John Robins will be handing out the certificates and said:

"The last twelve months in Kirklees has seen a large reduction in overall crime, a reduction in anti-social behaviour and at the same time the public are more confident in us as a police service. But this success is only achieved through the hard work and dedication of all those who live and work in the District.

"I am incredibly proud of all those who will be receiving awards at the ceremony on Monday. The Awards vary from the courageous actions of officers and members of the public to the resolute and determined work of investigators and police staff.

"All the officers and staff in the Division who are receiving awards have shown extreme professionalism and/or bravery when faced with difficult situations. It is a privilege for me to work with them.

"It is also an honour to have members of the public attending the ceremony together with the police. I firmly believe that it is the people in Kirklees who improve safety and protect the public; it is those people who I am presenting awards to."
