Heat-seeking Holbeck NPT find Cannabis Farm

Friday, 27 November, 2009

The Holbeck Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) discovered a cannabis farm at a house in their local area after being alerted to the property by a thermal camera.

A government-funded organisation were carrying out energy efficiency and insulation checks in the Holbeck NPT area when their specialist camera spotted an end terrace property giving off much more heat than its neighbours.

Photos taken by the camera indicated that the heat was coming from the cellar and upstairs bedroom areas of the house. The photos were passed to the Holbeck NPT, who secured a warrant for the property under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Police officers and police community support officers (PCSOs) who visited the property found almost 50 cannabis plants along with mature harvested cannabis plants, and a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and possession of class B drugs with intent to supply.

He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Inspector Damien Miller of the Holbeck NPT said: "The photos gave the organisation cause for concern because of the amount of heating coming from the property, and they were right to contact the NPT to investigate further.

"The vast majority of information we receive about cannabis farms comes from concerned members of the public, and I would encourage anyone with suspicions about people cultivating cannabis to contact us in confidence."

Residents who suspect someone of being involved in cultivating cannabis or drug dealing is asked to contact their local Neighbourhood Policing Team, or Crimestoppers anonymously and in confidence on 0800 555 111.
