West Yorkshire Police will:

  1. Always treat you fairly, with dignity and respect, ensuring that you have fair access to our services at a time that is reasonable and suitable for you.

  2. Provide you with information about your dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team.

  3. Ensure your NPT and other police patrols are visible and on your patch at times when they will be most effective and when you tell us you most need them. We will ensure that your team are not taken away from neighbourhood business more than is absolutely necessary. They will spend at least 80% of their time visibly working in your neighbourhood, tackling your priorities. Staff turnover will be minimised.

  4. Respond to every message directed to your NPT within 24 hours and where necessary, provide a more detailed response as soon as we can.

  5. Aim to answer 999 calls within 10 seconds, deploying to emergencies immediately giving an estimated time of arrival, getting to you safely and as quickly as possible. We will aim to get to you within 15 minutes.

  6. Answer all non-emergency calls promptly. If attendance is needed, send a patrol giving you an estimated time of arrival and:
    • If you are vulnerable or upset aim to be with you within 60 minutes.
    • If you are calling about an issue that we have agreed with your community will be a neighbourhood priority and attendance is required, we will aim to be with you within 60 minutes.
    • Alternatively, if appropriate, we will make an appointment to see you at a time that fits in with your life and within 48 hours.
    • If agreed that attendance is not necessary we will give you advice, answer your questions and/or put you in touch with someone who can help.

  7. Arrange public meetings to agree your priorities, at least once a month, giving you a chance to meet your local team with other members of your community.

  8. Provide monthly updates on progress and on local crime and policing issues. This will include the provision of crime maps, information on specific crimes and what happened to those brought to justice, details of what action we and our partners are taking to make your neighbourhood safer and information on how your force is performing.

  9. If you have been a victim of crime agree with you how often you would like to be kept informed of progress in your case and for how long. You have the right to be kept informed at least every month if you wish for as long as is reasonable.

  10. Acknowledge any dissatisfaction with the service you have received within 24 hours of reporting it to us. To help us fully resolve the matter, discuss with you how it will be handled, give you an opportunity to talk in person to someone about your concerns and agree with you what will be done about them and
    how quickly.

Latest Policing Pledge Update

The Policing Pledge is our promise to deliver a better service to you within your community.

A significant amount of work has been ongoing to introduce the Pledge and deliver its promises about the standards of service you have the right to expect.

In this video, Assistant Chief Constable John Parkinson talks about the latest review of progress made in bringing the Pledge to West Yorkshire and the work which is still ongoing to make its promises a reality.

Text Transcript

Assistant Chief Constable John Parkinson:

"The Policing Pledge is our promise to deliver a better service to you.

We launched our Pledge at the beginning of this year and we have made really good progress making that promise the reality.

In July of this year, Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary (HMIC) reviewed how well we were doing and that included asking members of the public directly.

Today, they have published their findings and West Yorkshire Police have been graded as Fair.

What that means is, there’s more work to do and improvements to make - we recognise that. But, as I said at the beginning, we have made real progress since we launched at the beginning of the year.

HMIC identified some areas where we were particularly good. They recognised the work of our Neighbourhood Policing Teams, the fact that you know who they are, that you say they are visible on our streets and that you say they keep you informed about what’s going on."

They also recognised that you welcome the additional information that is given at public meetings.

The grade reflects the progress of just six months and after all, there’s a snapshot in time. We have continued to make improvements and I am really proud of that fact.

The Pledge is our ongoing commitment to you, and with your support, we can continue to make a positive difference in the places where you live.

Why do we have a Pledge?

Answering the question is Assistant Chief Constable John Parkinson, with responsibility for Citizen Focus.

Assistant Chief Constable John Parkinson:

"Hello, I’m John Parkinson, I’m the Assistant Chief Constable with responsibility for citizen focus. So why do we have a pledge? Well I think its really important that we show our commitment to agree to working with you, to listen to your concerns and local priorities and that we respond to them so you can see that we are making a real difference. I think it's important that you are able to keep track of what it is that we are actually doing and it meets your needs. And essentially, what we really want to do is to improve our quality of service to you, the public and communities of West Yorkshire".

"So what is a Pledge. Well it’s our commitment to be courteous, compassionate and committed to delivering a really high quality of service. What actually is our pledge though to you in West Yorkshire? Well I want our staff to be recognisable, visible and available to you. I want you to be able to recognise the person, the officer, the member of staff that walks down the street. I want you to know how to be able to get hold of them. And when you do that, I want them to be able to provide you with a service that you expect. I want them to be responsive, to listen to your concerns, to be able to recognise your local priorities and what really affects you the most. And I want them to keep you informed so you know what’s going on in your street, in your neighbourhood and if you’ve been a victim of crime or a witness, to let you know what’s happening with that particular case so you feel a real sense of understanding of what your local police are doing for you".
