Ken originates from Stoke-on-Trent but also lived in the East Midlands, the South Coast, South Wales and Liverpool before settling in West Yorkshire in 1980. A graduate of London and Liverpool Universities, Ken had a 30 year career in field social work with various local authorities in several parts of the UK. Often specialising in the management of child protection work brought him into routine contact with the police services in Wales, the Midlands and Yorkshire.
He served as a Labour Councillor for Birkby Ward in Kirklees between 1984 and 1992. He served on West Yorkshire Police Authority from 1986 to 1992, being Vice Chair of the Authority for five years. During this time he set up West Yorkshire’s first ‘Community Safety Partnership’, a project involving Kirklees Council and the national organisation ‘Crime Concern’.
After taking early retirement from his work in 1998, Ken returned to politics and has represented Deighton Ward since 1999, returning to serve the Police Authority in 2000.
