The COntribution of Social Media In Crisis management (COSMIC) project will identify the most effective ways to utilise new information and communication technologies in crisis situations for the protection of ordinary citizens. The project will result in a set of guidelines for citizens, government authorities, first responders and industry for the most effective use of ICTs to aid citizen security during crises.

The iSAR+ Project aims to research and develop guidelines and an associated platform that enables citizens in emergencies or crises using new mobile and online technologies to actively participate in the response effort, through the bi-directional provision, dissemination, sharing and retrieval of information essential for critical Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) intervention, in search and rescue (SAR), law enforcement and medical assistance.

The overall objective of EmerGent, Emergency Management in Social Media Generation, is to understand the impact of social media in emergencies – both positive and negative - in order to enhance the safety and security of citizens. EmerGent’s results will also strengthen European companies supplying services and products related to Emergency Management.
Wherever emergencies or crises occur, ad-hoc communities are built through existing social media channels. These communities are often not connected at all or perhaps are weakly connected to the emergency management services.
