Body Worn Video Cameras

West Yorkshire Police process your personal data using Body Worn Video cameras for a number of purposes.

We use Body Worn Video cameras to process your personal data under the Data Protection Act 2018 for the purposes of the prevention, investigation, detection or prosecution of criminal offences or the execution of criminal penalties, including the safeguarding against and the prevention of threats to public security.

Body Worn Cameras, where appropriate, are in a state of permanent recording known as prerecord. This is because offences can occur suddenly and unexpectedly and would be unrecorded if the BWV camera were not activated in time to capture the data. Prerecord is deleted every 30 seconds unless activated for a police incident.

For more information about how WYP processes personal data for these purposes please go to our Privacy Information Notice at:

We also use BWV for other purposes which fall outside of the law enforcement purpose. This processing is covered under GDPR 2018 Part 2. Recordings may include the processing of your personal data for a number of legitimate purposes such as safeguarding, supporting victims, safety at public events etc.

For more information about the processing of your personal data and your data rights under GDPR 2018 please go to:
