Diversity, Equality & Inclusion Strategy
Our Diversity, Equality & Inclusion Strategy brings together the various aspects of equality, diversity and inclusion that fall within policing boundaries, and strives to achieve a police service that has the trust and confidence of all communities and reflects the communities it serves. The strategy recognises that equality, diversity and human rights are an integral part of everyday business and is the responsibility of every individual involved or connected with West Yorkshire Police in whatever capacity.
West Yorkshire Police is a “Positive About Disabled People” employer, which guarantees an applicant with disabilities an interview if they meet the basic conditions for the job.
When reviewing or developing new policies, projects and working practices, Equality & Human Rights Assessments are carried out to ensure that people’s basic rights and the needs of diverse communities and individuals, such as those who may be the most disadvantaged or excluded in society, are consciously and properly considered.
The West Yorkshire Police equality objectives align with the Police and Crime Plan 2016-2021.
Objective 1 Increase awareness and reporting around hate crime and incidents and provide victims with appropriate support.
Objective 2 Improve engagement with vulnerable or disadvantaged people, particularly young people, to prevent them from becoming either a victim or perpetrator of crime and anti-social behaviour.
Objective 3 Improve service delivery processes to victims of crime who are of Black Minority Ethnicity (BME) as well as victims of gender-based crime, such as domestic abuse and serious sexual offences.
Objective 4 Improve the identification and response to vulnerable children and adults by reduction of serious crimes such as Child Sexual Exploitation and support the Prevent Agenda.
Objective 5 Ensure Stop and Search activity is used appropriately, proportionately and when necessary and is conducted in an intelligence-led and ethical manner.
Objective 6 Ensure the workforce mix, including voluntary and engagement opportunities support the needs of the organisation and is representative of the community we serve.
Objective 7 Work with partners to raise awareness of the impact of homophobic bullying and the additional risks and vulnerabilities faced by children, young people and the wider community.
Objective 8 Improve access to information and police services for people with a disability as a victim, witness or offender.
