Corporate Communications Profile :

West Yorkshire Police's Corporate Communications, formally the 'Press Office', is responsible for promoting the work of the Force, so maintaining public understanding and goodwill and boosting public confidence.

The team of Divisional and Headquarters staff operate six days a week and handle around 45,000 calls a year from the media seeking information or updates on incidents or police initiatives across the county. We also give help and guidance to police officers wishing to issue press releases or appeals for information. A Communications Officer is always on-call out of office hours.

Communications Officers provide practical support at the scene of major incidents and helps deal with serious crime, managing media interest and offering officers help and advice on publicity. They are responsible for internal and external communications, through written, audio and visual material, including images, video and digital communications.

During the past year we have worked on enquiries ranging from murder and missing children to major projects such as the Metal Theft and a binge drinking awareness and enforcement initiative.

One of our main aims is to help promote the work of West Yorkshire Police and achieve a greater understanding of some of the issues facing the police service. Corporate Communications enables the public to take a closer look at what officers do best - protecting the public and detecting crime.

The Corporate Communications team provides training and advice to officers throughout the Force on topics such as how to deal with TV and radio interviews, and dealing with the media in general.
