Illegal highs

Illegal highs, also known as psychoactive substances, mimic the effects of controlled drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis.  They have similar negative side effects such as breathing difficulties, heart palpitations, paranoia, psychosis, hallucinations, seizures, comas and even death.  These substances can take the form of powders, pills and herbal materials and look similar to the controlled drugs that they mimic. 

On Thursday 26th May 2016, it became illegal to produce, supply, offer to supply, possess with intent to supply, import or export psychoactive substances.

The new legislation targets those who sell these potentially lethal substances and provides the police with greater powers to take action against those who produce or supply them.

There are many different illegal highs on the market, sold in ‘headshops’ and over the internet.  Examples of brand names include:
