Visible Footprint

  1. Is there a visible footprint at the crime scene left behind by the suspect(s)?

  2. Can you see the pattern of the sole of the shoe?

How to preserve the Footprint

  1. Find a washing up bowl, bucket or something similar that can be placed over the footrpint to protect it from the weather or being disturbed. Ensure it is big enough to cover the whole print.

  2. Place the bowl or similar over the top of the footprint

    (In the case of a footprint in snow please do not cover it as it may melt)

  3. If the bowl is likely to blow away place something heavy on top like a stone or similar to keep it in position.

  4. If the footprint is inside please use the same method and/or try and stay away from the area ensuring it is not disturbed by children or pets.

Tools, cans, bottles and cigarette butts

  1. Has the suspect dropped or handled any tools?

  2. Has the suspect left behind a bottle or can?

  3. Has the suspect dropped a cigarette butt?

How to preserve the item

  1. Leave the item where it is if possible.

  2. If it is outside find a washing up bowl, bucket or something similar that can be placed over the item without touching it to protect it from the weather or being disturbed. Ensure it is big enough to cover the whole item.

  3. Place the bowl or similar over the top of the item.

  4. If the bowl is likely to blow away place something heavy on top like a stone or similar to keep it in position.

  5. If you believe the item would be better being brought inside due to severe weather or duration it is likely to be outside find a clean and unused bin liner, carrier bag, food bag or similar.

  6. Place the bag over your hand.

  7. Pick up the evidence in the plastic bag, trying to touch as little of it as possible.

  8. Pull the rest of the bag over the item.

  9. Take the item inside and place it where it won’t be disturbed, such as a cupboard away from children and pets.

Preserving Blood or Visible Fingerprints

  1. Has the suspect cut themselves? Is there any blood present at the scene of the crime?

  2. Is there a VISIBLE fingerprint at the crime scene (perhaps on some glass or a highly polished surface?)

How to preserve the Blood or Fingerprints

  1. If possible avoid disturbing the area where the evidence is, keeping children and pets away from it.

  2. If it is outside and you believe the evidence may be lost, please complete this online form and then call Police on 101
