"West Yorkshire Police – what's your emergency?"
Our Initial Contact Officers are based at our Contact Management Centre at either Dudley Hill, Bradford or Laburnum Road, Wakefield.
Salary: £24,921 rising incrementally to £27,351 per annum over four years. In addition, 20% shift allowance and 13.45% weekend enhancements (as applicable).
This takes the salary to a combined amount of £33,257.07 rising to £36,499.91 per annum based on full time hours.
As an Initial Contact Officer for West Yorkshire Police, you will be responding to both emergency and non-emergency calls being the first point of contact for members of the public.
Many people may only use our services once in their lifetime; others might regularly need our assistance. Collectively our ambition is to provide the highest possible quality of service to them all so that we can protect and reassure the vulnerable, tackle crime and disorder and bring offenders to justice. You will have a critical role to play in making sure that the communities of West Yorkshire have confidence in their police service and that they are satisfied with the actions we take. This is not just about working in a call centre; this is about exceptional public service and teamwork to ensure the best possible outcomes for people who need our help.
All candidates will follow an Apprenticeship Training programme which is an opportunity to earn a wage whilst gaining a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification (equivalent to A Level).
If your application is successful you will be given all the training necessary to perform the role of an Initial Contact Officer, but will need to have the following:
- Be aged 18 years or over at the time of appointment
- Typing speed of minimum 28 words per minute
- Ability to successfully complete IT courses required for the role
- Basic knowledge of and is able use computer packages such as Microsoft Office
- Be able to communicate clearly and effectively
- Ability to work shifts

Part time, including enhancements, salary £15,413
Part time, average hours per week – 18.5
9 and 10 hour shifts
3 shifts working then 4 or 10 days off
Shift pattern – 2 earlies, 1 late, 10 rest days
Followed by –
1 late, 2 nights, 4 rest days
