Burglar Who Targeted Elderly Victims Is Jailed

Monday 26 February 2024

A thief who targeted vulnerable victims in supported living accommodation has been jailed for more than three years.

Sorinel Oprea (22) from Leeds was jailed for 40 months at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday 22 February after pleading guilty to burglary offences targeting elderly residents living in sheltered housing in Kirklees and Wakefield.

The 22-year-old, of no fixed address, had targeted a sheltered living complex for elderly residents in Mirfield in November 2023, and committed offences at a similar complex in the Wakefield area in the same month.

Items taken in the burglaries included cash, phones and a diamond ring of significant monetary and sentimental value to its owner.

Police in Kirklees and Wakefield conducted multiple enquiries into the offences as part of the investigation, which was led by the Kirklees District Crime Team.

Oprea was linked to the offences and arrested on December 2.  He was charged to appear before magistrates on December 5.

PC Wainwright of the Kirklees District Crime Team, who led the investigation, said: “We welcome the sentencing of Oprea for burglary offences in which he quite deliberately targeted elderly and vulnerable victims.

“These offences were quite frankly despicable, and we know they caused very understandable distress to victims, their families and in wider communities.

“We continue to urge anyone who has information about any such offences in their communities to contact West Yorkshire Police.

“If a burglary is in progress, please always ring 999 to allow officers to get to the scene as quickly as possible and try and catch suspects.”
