Police are advising drivers to be vigilant following recent attempts by thieves to steal higher value cars from Wakefield homes.

Having your vehicle stolen can be extremely upsetting and have a major impact on your daily routine – getting to work, dropping the kids off at school or running a business. Car Key burglaries account for just under 10% of burglaries in West Yorkshire and some of the makes and models stolen include VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta, Audi A3 and Vauxhall Corsa. The vehicles stolen may end up getting written off, used in other criminal offences, sold on or broken down for parts.
Did you know a thief can take the catalytic converter from your car in a matter of minutes and leave you to foot the bill? Precious metals such as rhodium, platinum and palladium are used in some catalytic converters. The price of these metals rise and fall like share prices and have risen sharply in recent years, as a result this has led to an increase in the theft of catalytic convertors. Cars that are most often targeted are older Toyota and Honda motor vehicles as well as some hybrid vehicles, as these vehicles have two power sources, so the catalytic converter is used less frequently. The metals are less likely to corrode, meaning they can be worth more and therefore more attractive to thieves.

Four people were arrested by police in Leeds on a proactive operation aimed at the anti-social use of motor vehicles.

Loan Sharks - What is a loan shark? What action can you take? Loan sharks are illegal moneylenders who often charge very high interest rates. They often target people who need to borrow money and can't access it from legal sources. Loan sharks often take illegal action to collect the money they have lent you, such as threatening violence or taking away your credit cards. In extreme cases, they have been known to force non-payers into prostitution and drug dealing.
