Monday 28 January, 2019

Kirklees Neighbourhood policing teams conducted a joint operation with West Yorkshire Trading Standards seizing thousands of illegal cigarettes.

The operation took place overnight on Thursday 24 January in Huddersfield.

The aim of the operation was to disrupt the criminal use of retail premises for the supply of non-duty paid and counterfeit goods, with particular focus on tobacco products.

Officers and the teams from West Yorkshire Trading Standards visited licensed premises, checked the terms of their license and whether they were in compliance to the terms of their licence issued by Kirklees Council; including whether at the time of the visit, the person in charge of the premises was suitable.

The operation was a success and achieved the following results:

  • 14,520 cigarettes seized;
  • 1.3kg hand rolling tobacco seized;
  • 312 illegal blunts seized

Immigration checks were also conducted to check the status of any individuals of concern to ensure they were legally in the UK and allowed to work.

All of the visits to the premises were intelligence led through information given to police officers and NPT teams.
