Latest Festive Burglary Prevention Messages Released Today

Friday, 23rd December, 2016

The seventh festive crime message from a young crime fighter is being released today. Children are helping West Yorkshire Police in their campaign against burglary using festive video messages to remind people how to protect their homes. At this time of year, in the run up to Christmas, burglaries tend to increase but by taking simple measures you can help prevent your home and belongings being targeted.

Using a twist on a popular game, the Force is using notes stuck to people's heads as a reminder of burglary prevention methods. Children aged two to seven years old have recorded festive video messages for people in West Yorkshire giving them simple advice.

Today's message is

''Use your burglar alarm - it won't stop Santa."

The other six messages are:

  • Hide your Christmas presents so burglars can't see them.
  • Lock your doors and windows - Santa can get down the chimney.
  • Leave a light on when you go late night shopping for presents.
  • Don't leave valuables on view - just leave a mince pie for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph.
  • Take your door key out of the lock - Santa will find a way in.
  • Put present packaging in the wheelie bin, not next to it.

The videos can be viewed at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/burglary  and the final one will be released on Christmas Eve tomorrow.

A poster campaign backs up the messages.

Force Crime Prevention Officer, Chris Joyce, said: "The festive period in the run up to Christmas is traditionally a time when burglaries increase, but there are simple things you can do to help protect your home. It can take just 60 seconds for burglars to get into your home and steal your belongings but you can help prevent them by making it more difficult by removing opportunities they may look for.

Crime prevention doesn't have to cost a lot of money - taking simple measures such as locking your doors and windows, not leaving valuables on display and using your alarm can significantly reduce your chances of being a victim.

We want everyone to enjoy this festive period, so please take these simple measures and stop the burglars."

District crime prevention officers are there to support members of the public in helping you to do your bit to prevent crime and can be contacted via 101.
