One Month On In The Search For Mateusz Lugowski

It’s now been a month since Mateusz Lugowski from Lupset was last seen near to the River Calder at Chantry Bridge in Wakefield.

Despite extensive searches and enquiries, the last confirmed sighting of Mateusz was at 15.20 on Sunday January 19 when he was seen by two friends, close to the river behind the Evans Halshaw garage.

Active enquiries to find Mateusz are still taking place and underwater search teams have been out this week searching the river.

Detective Inspector Jordan Piper from Wakefield CID said:

‘Despite the ongoing investigation and media appeals to find Mateusz, we have not seen or heard from him since January 19.

‘We are acutely aware of the pain Mateusz’s disappearance is having on his family and we desperately want to find him.

‘The search for him over the last four weeks has involved a number of resources; CCTV enquiries, house to house, specialist search officers, neighbourhood police patrols, underwater search teams, drones, dogs and helicopters.

‘We will carry out searches until all lines of enquiry have been explored.

‘I would like to thank members of the public who have assisted with the search and shared our appeals on social media.’

Police have today released new CCTV footage in the search for missing Wakefield teenager Mateusz Lugowski.

Mateusz was last seen on CCTV at 15.14 on Sunday 19 January near the Domino’s Pizza in the Chantry Bridge area, he was then seen at 15.20 by two school friends close to the river behind the Evans Halshaw garage.

Despite speaking to his friends, family and witnesses, this is the last confirmed sighting of Mateusz. He has not been seen since.

Today Police have released CCTV taken on the 117 bus as Mateusz made his way into the city Centre shortly before 3pm on 19 January.

Police are hoping that the video footage will jog people’s memories of that day and may have seen Mateusz wearing his distinctive dark and light blue rucksack.

Superintendent Kate Riley of Wakefield District Police said:

‘We are continuing to carry out extensive searches and enquiries in our investigation to find Mateusz.

‘The search for him has involved a number of resources; we have trawled CCTV, conducted house to house enquiries and spoken to a number of people in the area.

‘Specialist search officers, neighbourhood police patrols, underwater search teams, drones, dogs and helicopters have all been used in the investigation.

‘Mateusz's family are desperate for news and just wants answers. They have been helping search for him over the last two weeks.

‘His family are being supported by specially trained officers in what understandably has been a very difficult time for them.

‘I would like to thank all the people of Wakefield and from across West Yorkshire who have helped in the search for Mateusz, we have had hundreds of calls and information given, and followed up every call and piece of information in the search for Mateusz.

‘I would continue to appeal for anyone who may have seen Mateusz on Sunday afternoon in the Chantry Bridge area to come forward and anyone who might have found any items which belong to Mateusz including his distinctive light and dark blue rucksack, any clothing he had on which includes grey jogging bottoms with a dark stripe down the side and a grey and black hoodie and a Huawei mobile phone.’

It has now been 10 days since the last confirmed sighting of 16 year old Mateusz Lugowski from Wakefield.

A number of searches including waterways are continuing as officers continue to appeal for information about Mateausz.

Resources such as specialist search officers, neighbourhood police patrols, underwater search teams, drones, dogs and helicopters have all been used in the investigation.

There have been no further CCTV or confirmed sighting of Mateusz since.

Police today have released another picture of Mateusz.

Detective Inspector Phil Davis of Wakefield CID said:

‘The disappearance of Mateusz is causing his family so much pain, they desperately want some news and have been out in the area where he was last seen searching for him.

‘Our focus remains on searching the area around where he was last seen in Chantry Bridge with searches by officers and mountain rescue teams taking place at key locations in the area.

‘We’re still hoping for the best outcome for Mateusz and his family and searches will remain ongoing in the coming days to find him and bring him home.

‘I would like to thank the volunteers and people who have shared our appeal on social media.’

Police are continuing to appeal for the public's help to find a teenager Mateusz Lugowski who has been missing since Sunday January 19.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who was travelling over the Chantry Bridge on Sunday between 14.30 and 15.00 who may have seen Mateusz or may have dash cam footage.

Police in Wakefield are continuing to appeal for the public’s help to find a teenager missing from the Lupset area of Wakefield.

Mateusz Lugowski, 16, was reported missing on Sunday (January 19) at 5pm.

Today officers have released a CCTV image of Mateusz. It was taken on Sunday 19 January at 14.42 near to the Domino’s Pizza in the Chantry Bridge area. This is the last confirmed sighting of Mateusz.

Mateusz is described as 5ft2 with short brown hair.

He was last seen wearing a blue and black hooded jacket, grey tracksuit bottoms with thick blue stripe and blue trainers with white stripes. He may have a blue rucksack with him.

Detective Inspector Suzanne Gall of Wakefield CID said:

‘We are growing increasingly concerned about Mateusz’s welfare; we urgently need to reunite him with his family.

‘Officers are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry.

‘I would urge anyone who has seen Mateusz to get in touch with us.’

Police are appealing for the public’s help to find a teenager missing from Lupset area of Wakefield.

Mateusz Lugowski, 16, was last seen in the Chantry Bridge area yesterday evening.

He is described as 5ft2, slim build with short brown hair.

He was last seen wearing a blue and black hooded jacket, grey tracksuit bottoms with thick blue stripe and blue trainers with white stripes. He may have a blue rucksack with him.

His family and Police are concerned for his welfare.
