Friday, 21st April, 2017

The final spring burglary crime prevention message from our budding young crime fighters has been released today. Forgotten Something Campaign

The young crime fighter is one of several children helping West Yorkshire Police in its campaign against burglary by starring in a seasonal video message to remind people how to protect their homes.

With lighter and warmer nights fast approaching, burglaries tend to increase as opportunistic thieves take advantage of open windows and doors.

In the latest campaign, a series of videos have been released featuring children offering simple steps you can take to help prevent your home and belongings being targeted.

Using a twist on a popular game, the Force is using notes stuck to children's foreheads as a reminder of burglary prevention methods. Children have recorded spring video messages for people in West Yorkshire, giving them simple crime prevention advice.

Today's final message is "Lock your windows even if you're not in the room".

The other four messages are:

  • “Lock your garden tools away”
  • “Use your alarm”
  • “Hide your keys” and
  • “Keep keys hidden, not near a letterbox or cat flap.”

The videos can be viewed at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/burglary.

A poster campaign also backs up the messages : -

Force Crime Prevention Officer, Chris Joyce, said:

"The onset of lighter nights and warmer weather means more people will be spending time outside in their gardens, but there are simple things you can do to help protect your home. It can take just 60 seconds for burglars to get into your home and steal your belongings but you can help prevent this by making it more difficult for them by removing opportunities they may look for. Forgotten Something Campaign

"Crime prevention doesn't need to cost huge sums of money. Simply locking your doors, shutting your windows and not leaving valuables on display can make a great difference. These easy steps can significantly reduce your chance of being a victim of burglary."
