Update in Relation to the Death of Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox

Update following the incident in Birstall last week in which Jo Cox, Batley and Spen MP, sadly died.

Bernard Kenny, aged 77, who suffered a serious injury to his abdomen after trying to assist Jo, has been discharged from hospital after treatment.

Bernard and his family would like to express their sincere condolences to the family of Jo Cox, a very sad loss for the community.

"We would also like to thank people at the scene, the police, ambulance service and the staff at LGI who were excellent in dealing with the situation.

"Finally, many people have shown great kindness over the last few days; this has been much appreciated by the whole family, but now we hope you will respect the fact that we need time and privacy for Bernard to recover."

This is an update in relation to the death of Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox

Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen of the Protective Services (Crime) department of West Yorkshire Police (leading the investigation), said:

"We have now charged a man with murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon.

"Thomas Mair, 52, of Birstall, will appear at Westminster [in London] Magistrates Court today (Saturday 18 June)."
